Musical Theatre Repertoire Coaching & Accompaniment

Whether you are preparing for a performance, developing an audition book, returning to singing after some time away, or simply want the opportunity to explore repertoire with an experienced pianist and musical director, these flexible one-to-one sessions are designed around you.

I offer professional musical theatre repertoire coaching and accompaniment in Chester, combining skilled piano accompaniment with practical musical and performance guidance.

There is no requirement to commit to weekly lessons. Sessions can be booked individually whenever they are useful, whether that means working together regularly for a period of time or simply meeting occasionally as your repertoire and performance goals develop.

What can we work on?

Sessions are completely tailored to you and the repertoire you bring.

We might work on:

  • exploring new musical theatre repertoire
  • finding songs that suit you, your voice and your performance style
  • developing an existing repertoire or audition book
  • acting through song and communicating text
  • musical interpretation, phrasing and stylistic detail
  • tempo, dynamics and shaping a performance
  • cuts, introductions and endings
  • working confidently with a live accompanist
  • preparing repertoire for auditions
  • preparing songs for concerts, showcases and other performances
  • developing a longer-term programme of repertoire
  • preparation for advanced performance qualifications and diplomas

Sometimes the most valuable thing is simply having the time and space to try material with an experienced pianist, explore different possibilities and discover what works.

A collaborative approach

These sessions are not intended to replace specialist singing lessons where vocal technique is the main focus.

Instead, I work with you from the perspective of an experienced musical director, pianist, accompanist and teacher, helping you bring together the musical and dramatic elements of a song.

For singers who already work with a singing teacher or vocal coach, repertoire sessions can complement that work particularly well, giving you the opportunity to put technique into practice with a live pianist and concentrate on the music, storytelling and performance.

Exploring and developing repertoire

Choosing repertoire can be one of the most enjoyable parts of developing as a performer, but it can also be difficult to know what genuinely works for you.

You are welcome to bring music you already know, songs you would like to explore, or simply some ideas about the type of repertoire you are interested in.

We can play through material, experiment with different approaches and begin building a collection of songs that feels individual to you.

There does not always need to be an exam, audition or performance at the end of it. These sessions can simply provide an opportunity to enjoy singing and rediscover repertoire in a relaxed, supportive setting.

Auditions and audition repertoire

If you are preparing for drama school, conservatoire, university, professional or amateur theatre auditions, repertoire sessions can also help you develop and maintain a strong audition book.

We can explore contrasting material, consider whether songs genuinely showcase you effectively, and work on the musical and dramatic detail that helps a performance feel confident and well prepared.

For more focused preparation for a particular audition, my dedicated Audition Coaching sessions may also be appropriate.

Concerts, performances and personal projects

You may have a concert, cabaret, showcase or other performance in mind, or perhaps simply the beginnings of an idea.

Sessions can be used to explore possible repertoire, develop a programme over time and prepare individual songs for performance.

They can also provide ongoing musical support for singers developing their own performance projects.

Advanced and diploma repertoire

I am also happy to work with experienced singers preparing more advanced programmes, including repertoire for performance diplomas where appropriate.

Sessions can be used over an extended period, allowing repertoire to develop gradually rather than requiring a fixed weekly commitment.

If you are considering a particular qualification, concert programme or longer-term performance goal, please feel free to contact me first to discuss what you have in mind.

Flexible sessions to suit you

There is no requirement to book a regular weekly slot.

My own professional work includes examining, musical direction and performance work, so my availability changes throughout the year. My online booking system shows my current availability in real time and allows you to book individual sessions whenever they suit you.

You might:

  • book a single session to explore some new repertoire
  • leave several weeks between sessions
  • book a few sessions close together before a performance
  • work together occasionally over several months
  • increase the frequency when you are working towards a particular goal

The structure is deliberately flexible.

Lesson Length and Fees

Sessions are available in the following formats:

30 minutes – £25

Ideal for focused work on a particular song or a specific musical or performance issue.

45 minutes – £35

Useful for developing one or two pieces in greater depth.

60 minutes – £45

Recommended for repertoire exploration, performance coaching and longer sessions where you would like time to work through several pieces or ideas.

Sessions are booked and paid for individually, so there is no requirement to purchase a block of lessons or commit to a regular timetable.

Many performers find that a small number of focused sessions in the weeks leading up to their audition makes a significant difference.

Location

Sessions are available in Chester and the surrounding area.

Depending on the nature of the session, we can discuss the most suitable location. This may include sessions at my own teaching location, at your home where appropriate, or at an alternative rehearsal or teaching venue by arrangement.

If you are unsure which option would work best, please get in touch before booking.
