I offer specialist ABRSM Music Theory tuition online for learners preparing for graded theory exams, with particular support for Grades 1–5 and the important Grade 5 Music Theory requirement.

Many instrumental learners reach Grade 5 on their instrument and then realise they need to pass Grade 5 Theory before moving on to higher ABRSM practical or performance grades. This can feel like a hurdle, especially if theory has not been studied regularly alongside instrumental lessons.

My lessons are designed to make music theory clear, structured and manageable. I help learners build confidence with notation, rhythm, keys, scales, intervals, chords, harmony, transposition and exam technique, so they feel properly prepared before taking the exam.

Grade 5 Music Theory is often the key point at which learners need extra support.

For many instrumental learners, Grade 5 Theory is the step required before progressing to ABRSM Grade 6, 7 or 8 practical or performance exams. It is also a valuable qualification in its own right, helping musicians understand more deeply how music works.

Grade 5 Theory preparation can support learners who:

Music theory works very well online. Lessons can be delivered clearly using shared resources, screen sharing, notation examples and written exercises.

Online lessons are suitable for learners across the UK and internationally.

Learners simply need:

• a computer or tablet
• a stable internet connection
• access to their theory workbook, past papers or lesson materials
• manuscript paper or a suitable digital notation tool where helpful

Online tuition is especially useful for ABRSM Theory because much of the work is written, analytical and discussion-based. Exercises can be reviewed together in real time, and feedback can be given clearly during the lesson.

ABRSM lists the following Guided Learning Hours for Music Theory Grades 1–5:

• Grade 3 – 9 hours
• Grade 4 – 12 hours
• Grade 5 – 12 hours

These timings are a useful guide, but every learner is different.

Some learners move more quickly because they already have strong practical musical experience. Others may benefit from extra consolidation, especially if they have not studied theory regularly before.

You do not necessarily need to start at Grade 1 if you already have some understanding of music theory. We can discuss a suitable starting point in your first lesson and choose the grade or pathway that best matches your current knowledge and goals.

Lessons are available as:

• 30 minutes – £30
• 45 minutes – £40
• 60 minutes – £50

For most Grade 5 learners, a 45-minute or 60-minute lesson is usually most useful, particularly when working through exam-style questions. Shorter sessions may be suitable for younger learners or focused follow-up work.

Sessions are typically arranged weekly or fortnightly, depending on the learner’s goals, timescale and current level.
